Glutamic Acid
What is Glutamic Acid?
Glutamic acid is an amino acid used to form proteins. (1) It is the main excitatory neurotransmitter in neurons. Abnormal distributions of the molecules receptors have been shown in hyper proliferative models such as psoriasis and skin regeneration. However, its biological in the skin remains unclear. For the first time it has been shown that exogenous use promotes hair growth and keratinocyte proliferation. Topical application decreased expression of genes related to apoptosis signaling in the skin. Also, it increased viability and proliferation in cultured human keratinocyte. (2) In a nutshell it does promote hair growth
What does Glutamic Acid do in hair products?
An amino acid found in hair that’s used as a humectant [Begoun (Hair) pg 84]. Sold as a crystalline white powder, this is a non-essential amino acid often made from vegetable protein. It’s often used to enhance food flavors, and as an antioxidant and humectant in cosmetics [Winter pg 258]. Made from Glutamine, it is an anionic amino acid known for being an effective humectant [Schueller pgs 153,156]. (3)
What does it do to hair?
It has been scientifically proven to promote hair growth and Keratinocyte proliferation
Where is Glutamic Acid produced?
Glucose is one of the major carbon sources for production (4). Certain plant(5) proteins (e.g., gliadin) yield as much as 45 percent of their weight; other proteins yield 10 to 20 percent. It is the most abundant amino acids in plants.
Yes, it is a naturally occurring ingredient that can be found in many plants around us. Not only that it is naturally occurring in our bodies.
